Any individual may have access to University Library facilities to use general stack collections, space and resources permitting. Click here to get information about the hours for a specific library.

The Kresge Business Library is open to the public who are welcome to use all the collection except for a small set of electronic databases.

The Law Library welcomes researchers who need to use the Library’s resources. Those who do not have emeritus professor status would need to fill out an application for a pass. Transportation – Anyone who lives close to an Ann Arbor bus stop can use Ann Arbor public transportation to get to a University Library. Anyone with a yellow or white Mcard can ride on all AATA regular fixed route buses for free. See the MRide FAQ for further details.

The city of Ann Arbor also provides the A-Ride Service for those who cannot use the standard Ann Arbor buses.

Parking – All UM retirees are eligible for an After Hours permit that allows parking in Blue, Yellow, and Orange areas after 3 pm on weekdays and any time on the weekend. Parking Services also issues Handicap verification permits.

Library to Library Delivery Service – This is a free service available to anyone who can log in to Mirlyn, the University Library catalog. A patron may request that any circulating item be sent from one participating library to another.

Drop Boxes – There are two drop boxes where you can return items you have checked out from the University Libraries that are accessible from a car. One is at the Shapiro Library. The drop box is on the northwest side of the building and is accessible from the driveway that runs between the Clements and Shapiro Libraries. The other is on North Campus. It is located in the circular driveway at the front of Pierpont Commons.

Accessibility at Individual Libraries for Patrons with Disabilities:

Art, Architecture and Engineering Library – The library and its stacks are wheelchair accessible. There is an ergo-assistive workstation for individuals in need of software designed for blind and visually impaired computer users. Dentistry Library – The library is wheelchair accessible but the stacks are not. Library staff will pull things off the shelf for patrons who cannot access items in the stacks. Other services for patrons with special needs can be arranged by calling the library before your visit (734-764-1526).

Fine Arts Library –There is wheelchair access to Tappan Hall via the east entrance. The stacks are generally not wheelchair accessible but library staff will retrieve materials from the shelves for patrons who cannot access items in the stacks. There is an elevator available for access to the lower level stacks.

Hatcher Graduate Library – Details on services available to patrons with disabilities are at http://www.lib.umich.edu/grad/disabilities.html. There are handicapped-designated parking spaces available in the Loading Dock of the Graduate Library.

Museums Library – Library staff will escort patrons to the appropriate stacks and will help to retrieve any items that are difficult to reach. Patrons with special needs can save time by calling ahead to make arrangements to have the items they need pulled off the shelf (734-764-0467).

Music Library – There is wheelchair access to the Moore building at the Macintosh Theater entrance, just off the lower circle and parking lot. In the Music Library itself the third floor (mezzanine) is not wheelchair accessible. Library staff will help to retrieve any items in the stacks that are difficult to reach. Patrons with special needs can save time by calling ahead to make arrangements to have the items they need pulled off the shelf (734-764-2512). Another alternative would be to use Library to Library Delivery and have circulating items sent to a more accessible library.

Public Health Library – The library and stacks are wheelchair accessible. Library staff will help to retrieve items that are difficult to reach. There is an ergo-assistive workstation for individuals in need of software designed for blind and visually impaired computer users. Shapiro Science Library – The stacks are wheelchair accessible. Library staff will help to retrieve items that are difficult to reach. Patrons with special needs can save time by calling ahead to make arrangements to have the items they need pulled off the shelf (734-764-3442).

Shapiro Undergraduate Library – The stacks are wheelchair accessible. Library staff will help to retrieve items that are difficult to reach and phone for cabs. Patrons with special needs can save time by calling ahead to make arrangements for these special services (734-764-7490).

Social Work Library – All facilities are wheelchair accessible. There is a Tele Sensory viewer available for the visually impaired which enlarges the typeface of printed text. There is also an ergo-assistive workstation for individuals in need of software designed for blind and visually impaired computer users. The closest disabled parking spots are four spaces in the blue lot next to West Hall on South University, directly opposite the School of Social Work Building.  Other blue lot disabled spaces can be found in the Church Street (south entrance) and Forest Street lots. There are a few guest disabled metered parking spaces on South University.

Taubman Medical Library – Details about special equipment available for patrons with disabilities are at http://www.lib.umich.edu/taubman/specialneeds.html Library staff will assist in retrieving items from the stacks and photocopying materials (with the standard per page photocopier charge) for patrons with disabilities.
