Donations of Books The University Library is happy to receive donations of books that would be new to our collection. Those wishing to donate one or two books may contact our Exchange & Gifts Division, or send the books directly to them. Contact information is at the Gifts and Exchange website. Donors of more than two books should contact the Selector for their subject. Donors should be advised that the University Library rarely adds duplicate books or journals to the collection. To check whether the Library already has a book, look it up in MIRLYN, the library catalog. Donated books become the property of the University Library and will not be returned. Books not wanted for the collection will in turn be donated to a library on one of our other campuses (Flint or Dearborn), to charity, or they may be sold for the benefit of the library. Donors wishing to take a tax deduction for the donation of books must notify the Library in advance. For large donations, the value of the gift must be a dollar amount based upon a formal appraisal arranged by the donor. Complete information on the donation of library materials can be found at the Exchange and Gifts donation page. The Special Collections Library of the University Library and The Bentley Historical Library both maintain collections of the papers of former faculty. Deep Blue provides a permanent, safe and accessible framework for scholarly, artistic and creative work produced at the University of Michigan. Examples of these works include:
Work deposited in Deep Blue must be a completed version, ready for distribution. For more information about what materials may be deposited in Deep Blue and how it works, see http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/about/index.html. If your department or school does not yet have a Deep Blue community account, you can contact the Deep Blue coordinator (deepblue@umich.edu) or your subject librarian to establish one. Once a community has been established, members may make their own deposits to the Deep Blue collection. Gifts of cash and securities to the University Library are extremely important in maintaining the excellence of this institution. Gifts help the Library to acquire, process, preserve and digitize collections. Gifts can also support the development of innovative services and to fund continuing education for our outstanding staff. Donors may designate how they would like their gift to be used. For further information about outright gifts or planned gifts to the University Library, contact Margaret McKinley at margiem@umich.edu or call 734-936-2384. |
