About MGet It

MGet It Troubleshooting

What is MGet It?

MGet It is a tool provided by the University Library that creates shortcuts to the full-text of online articles, as well as links to other Library services. When searching in many of the University Library databases, you will see an MGet It button or link that connects you to a menu of options. This service started in June 2003 and continues to improve.

What is the MGet It Citation Linker?

If you have a citation in hand from a bibliography or reading list and would like to go directly to the MGet It menu for that citation, try using the MGet It Citation Linker.

MGet It Citation Linker allows you to access a menu of SFX links using a citation without having to perform a database search. In some cases this will include a shortcut link to online full-text. First click on the appropriate tab for the type of citation you have (article, journal or book). Then enter as much information as you have in the appropriate boxes on the online form, and click on the SFX button in the lower right corner of the form or hit the Return or Enter key on your computer.

Citation Linker provides all the MGet It services currently available: links to available online full text, Library holdings for print and electronic versions (via automatic searches of Mirlyn), and links to document delivery services and Interlibrary Loan.

Who can use MGet It? From where?

MGet It is available to all users and guests on the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus, and to current students, faculty and staff of UM-Ann Arbor from off-campus. If you are connecting to Library databases from off-campus, you will login with your Library Authentication.

On campus:
If you are using a computer directly connected to the network of the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, you will see MGet It buttons/links in most databases and will be able to use the MGet It menu.

Off-campus:
If you authenticate (login) via UM-Ann Arbor's Library Authentication, you will be able to use MGet It. For more information on off-campus access to Library resources see: University Library: Off-Campus Access to Library Resources.

What do the menu MGet It options mean?

After you click on an MGet It button/link a new window will open with a menu. Options include:

We have it online!
If an electronic version of the item is available, you will see one or more links on the menu to available resources. In many cases this will link directly to a specific article. In some cases MGet It may only be able to connect you to a table of contents; the journal/publisher homepage; the search screen of a database containing the item; or a list of databases, one of which includes the item. At that point, you may need to navigate or perform a search to locate the specific article. If the Library has subscriptions from more than one source, you may see several options, giving you a choice of full-text; if one does not work, you can try another.

Check our catalog for an electronic or print copy:
MGet It provides a shortcut to search the UM Ann Arbor Library Catalog to check availability. Even if online full-text is not available, a print copy may be.

Have it delivered:
You can link to information and request forms if you wish to have a copy of an item delivered to you via a library service.

Save this Citation:
You can choose to import the citation into Refworks and Endnote.

Help:
This guide is available from the SFX menu. You can also send a question or comment to University Library staff by selecting the Questions or Comments? Ask Us! option.

Why are there multiple links to full-text?

The University Library may subscribe to an online publication from more than one source or company. The various options are included on the MGet It menu to provide you with a choice. Different sources may provide different formats. For example, some may provide a PDF (reprint) format, others only plain text. Also, if one online version is not working, the other options provide backup copies.

What does "MGet It" stand for and how does it work?

MGet It is University Library's name of a linking service at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor has purchased from Ex Libris, a library automation company. MGet It acts as an intermediary service to create a shortcut link between a "source" (for example, a database) and a "target" (for example, an online journal). This is accomplished by using the OpenURL protocol. The OpenURL transmits specific data about the item, such as the journal identifier, volume, issue and page, thus allowing a link between the source and the target. For more information see the Exlibris SFX web site.

Why don't I always go straight to the article when I click on the online resource?

MGet It gets you as close as it can to the full-text of the article. Differences in publishers' web sites and databases mean that sometimes MGet It can only get you to a table of contents, a journal homepage with a list of available issues and volumes, or a publisher's web site with a list of journals. At that point, you may need to navigate or perform a search to locate the specific article.

In some cases, the closest MGet It can get you is the search screen of a database that contains the article, and you will have to perform a search to retrieve the article from the database. And in some cases, the closest MGet It can get you is to a list or menu of databases, one of which contains the article; you will have to look on the list for the database that the MGet It menu says contains the article, enter that database, and then perform a search to retrieve the article.

I don't see MGet It links in my favorite database(s). Why not?

First, make sure you have JavaScript enabled in your web browser. In some databases, such as ISI Web of Science, you should make sure the starting page has completely loaded before you start searching, and click on an individual article record to see the MGet It link. Some databases do not support MGet It links due to incompatibilities between the database and the MGet It software.

Why can't I see the pop-up MGet It menu after clicking on the MGet It button/link?

Here are some suggestions:

  • The MGet It menu appears as a new "pop-up" type window. See if it is "hiding" behind another window on your desktop.
  • Make sure you have JavaScript enabled in your web browser.
  • Turn off any "pop-up killer" you may have on your computer or make sure the software is configured to allow the pop-ups from our SFX server.
  • Make sure you are using a current version of your web browser software.

I clicked on a menu option in MGet It, but I don't see anything, or the new window that I see is too small to read.

When you click on a specific menu option, MGet It opens it in a new window so that you can return to the MGet It menu if needed. See if the new window is "hiding" behind another window on your desktop. You can resize windows by dragging the edges or corners with your mouse.

Why do I get an error message when I click on the full-text link?

Some examples of why an error may occur include:

  • A citation may appear in a database or on a publisher's web site before the full text of the article is actually available (e.g., this may happen with some citations recently added to ArticleFirst and Current Contents)
  • A publisher may have failed to post an issue on their web site
  • An error in the citation, either in the database or at the publisher end (e.g., missing or incorrect page numbers) are somewhat common, especially for recent articles)
  • A problem with the publisher's web site where the online full-text is kept

See the next question for tips on what to try, stop at a Library reference desk, or contact Ask Us for assistance.

If an MGet It link to full-text is not working, what can I do right away?

  • If there is more than one full-text option on the SFX menu, try another one.
  • If there is only one full-text option, check the boxes beneath the link that contain citation information labeled "year" "volume" "issue" "start page". If one of these boxes is blank or contains an incorrect number, type in the information from the original citation. (The window with the database you were searching should still be open, so that you can check the citation.)
  • Try deleting the page number from the box labeled "start page"; you might be able to get to a table of contents for the issue, or to the journal homepage, and then navigate to the article. (This sometimes works if the page number was incorrect in the original database citation.)
  • Try clicking on the library catalog link from the MGet It menu. A new window will open with information from the library catalog; if the information presented is not helpful, click on the "start a Mirlyn session" link in this new window and try searching for the name of the journal or book. This second search might find it, for example, if we have a different edition of the book or if there is something wrong with the MGet It link.
  • Stop at a Library reference desk or contact Ask Us for assistance or to report SFX problems.

If there's no full-text link, does that mean the article is not available?

Not necessarily.... double-check by searching the UM Library Catalog; you may be able to link to full-text from there. Some databases don't work with MGet It, so direct links are not possible. There may be an error in the citation as listed in a particular database or an error in our MGet It configuration. In some cases a print copy may be available from the University Library.

The journal I want is asking for a password.

Only a few journals require special passwords for access to full-text of articles. If a special ID and password are required, the MGet It menu link to full-text will take you to a page that displays the needed password. You will need to make note of the password before clicking on the link to the journal (on that same page) or other online resource. If no special password page displays, a password should not be necessary. Please contact Ask Us for assistance.

When I click on the University of Michigan Library Catalog option, I get nothing. What are my options?

Either the Library does not own the item or there might be something wrong with the MGet It link. Try clicking on the library catalog link from the MGet It menu. A new window will open with information from the library catalog; if the information presented is not helpful, click on the "start a Mirlyn session" link in this new window and try searching for the name of the journal or book. This second search might find it, for example, if we have a different edition of the book or if there is something wrong with the MGet It link. If the Library does not own what you need, you can go back to the MGet It window and select "Delivery options" to order the item.

The MGet It Citation Linker does not seem to be working. What can I do?

The following tips may help solve the problem:

  • The name of the journal or book (or an ISSN or ISBN) must be filled in.
  • Some standardized journal abbreviations work, but complete journal name or ISSN is the most effective.
  • Check for typographical errors; spelling and spacing count!
  • The ampersand (&) character does not work; spell out the word "and."
  • Leave out punctuation marks on standard journal abbreviations. For example, enter j virol NOT j. virol.
  • The pull-down menu adjacent to the journal entry box provides three options: Contains, Begins with, or Exact match. If you are uncertain of the exact journal name, try one of the other options and search for keywords from the journal name.
  • Finish filling out the online form before you hit the Return or Enter key on your computer or you will submit an unfinished form.
  • Stop at a Library reference desk or contact Ask Us for assistance or to report MGet It problems.
