Organization
Collection
development activity in the University Library is divided among some seventy
subject specialists who are responsible for resource acquisitions,
collection management and service for their designated areas of subject
responsibility. Administratively, the Library Director has primary responsibility
for collection development policy, budget, and organization. As Chair
of the Collection Management and Development Committee, the Library Director
is regularly advised by representatives of the major Library collecting
units as well as managers of the primary support units for collection
development (Acquisitions, Preservation, Inter-Library Loan, etc.). The
Library's Collection Development Officer works with the Director to implement
collection policies and procedures, coordinate efforts across units, and
represent the Library in regional, national, and international collection
forums.
Electronic Resources
With the increased
prevalence of electronic resources, allied but separate team structures
have been developed for reviewing, acquiring and supporting digital
information resources. Many of these resources are licensed for campus-wide
access so may not appear to users as "belonging" to a particular unit
or division. General oversight for these and other subject- based teams
is the responsibility of a Library-wide E-TEAM chaired by the Associate
Director for Digital Library Initiatives.
Consortia Activities
and Memberships
As one of the nation's
leading research libraries, the University Library participates in a
number of associations, organizations and consortia that often affect
local collecting decisions. Among these affiliations are the Committee
on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), Digital Library Federation (DLF),
Center for Research Libraries (CRL), Association of Research Libraries
(ARL), the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC),
Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), Research Libraries Group
(RLG), Michigan Council of Library Directors (COLD).
