Buhr Shelving Facility

The University Library system is comprised of 16 campus library facilities. Given the finite space in these facilities and the nearly two miles of books received system-wide on an annual basis, libraries regularly transfer lesser-used volumes to the Buhr Shelving Facility. The Buhr Shelving Facility is also used to prolong the useful life of library materials since the preservation-sensitive environment maintains a constant temperature/humidity level. The Buhr Shelving Facility currently houses 2.5 million items.

ACCESS
The Buhr Shelving Facility uses a compact storage arrangement to maintain an optimal environment for library materials and reduce costs. Because books are shelved by size and location number instead of call number, the stacks are closed to the public. However, materials can be paged on demand at Buhr, or requested as explained below.

REQUESTS
Requests for Buhr materials can be made through the Mirlyn catalog, using the "Get This" option. They can also be made in person at any campus library. Faculty may also request Buhr materials via the 7-FAST Delivery Service for delivery to their campus offices. Users can also request materials via e-mail using the Buhr Request Form, or by contacting buhr.shelving.facility@umich.edu.

ON-SITE USE
The Buhr Shelving Facility has a reading room for on-site use of library materials. Materials may also be borrowed directly from Buhr. When consulting large numbers of items, please phone ahead if possible at (734) 763-9089.

PHOTOCOPYING SERVICE
A public photocopier that accepts copy cards is available at the Buhr Shelving Facility. Photocopying and/or borrowing of certain fragile materials may be prohibited.

COLLECTION HOLDINGS
Location information for Buhr holdings is included in Mirlyn, the library catalog of the University of Michigan. Since conversion of this status information is not yet complete, questions about possible holdings in Buhr should be directed to the Buhr Circulation/Stacks Office.

TRANSFER PROCESS
Each library develops review programs to identify volumes for transfer. While criteria for transfer vary by library, generally the focus is on older, lesser-used materials, and input is sought from faculty and researchers. Buhr is considered a dynamic collection and return of volumes to campus libraries may be considered if increased use warrants.
