General Information
Topic Description
Hours
The library is open 24 hours a day. Library staff is available 40 hours per week during the summer sessions only. The librarian's hours will be posted at the main desk in the library. Never hesitate to ask for assistance.
Collections
The collection consists of over 16,000 cataloged volumes and currently receives more than 50 paper journals. Numerous articles related to the Biological Station are also available in the Reprint File.
Loan Policy
Materials do not circulate from the library. The only exceptions are special arrangements between the librarian and the faculty for lab use.
Books
The books are shelved according to two distinct cataloging classifications: Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress (LC). Dewey Decimal and LC numbers begin with letters. Dewey numbers begin in the Annex and continue into the main building. All LC numbers (excluding those in Reference and Oversize shelving) are on the second floor. In you cannot locate a title, it may be on a course reserve table or with the New Books.
New Books
Books acquired since the previous summer are on display on the Annex on the west wall. They are arranged in call number order.
Course Reserves
Books and articles on reserve for a course are located on the tables in the Annex during the Spring session and on the tabled in the main room during the summer session.
Journals
Bound journals are interfiled with books and shelved in call number order in the stacks. The majority of unbound issues are shelved alphabetically by title near the main desk. Many journals are also available on the Web through the library's list of e-journals. Ask the Biostation librarian for more information.
Mirlyn
Mirlyn is the online catalog of the University of Michigan Libraries. Call numbers for books and journals are available in Mirlyn.
Online Resources
Listed below are some of the many online resources available:
  • Agricola
  • BIOSIS Previews (including Biological Abstracts)
  • Cambridge Scientific Abstracts
  • First Search
  • ISI Science Citation Index (Web of Science)
  • Zoological Record

Connect to these databases and many more through Find Databases - UM Library Search Tools. Guides to some of these resources and subject areas are available on the UM Science Library page. Feel free to ask the Biostation librarian for help using any of the electronic resources.

Reprint File
The library maintains a file of reprints of journal articles pertaining to local and Biostation research. These papers are in file cabinets on the west wall and are filed alphabetically by author.
Library to Library Loan
Materials not available in the Biostation library may often be borrowed from the Ann Arbor campus. Requests should be submitted as early in the term as possible to allow ample time for delivery. Because of time constraints, usually no attempt is made to borrow materials from other institutions. Only Biostation-oriented material should be requested. See the librarian for instruction, or use the Biostation Library's online library-to-library request form.
